Towards a Safer Dengue-Free Chattogram

After facing severe dengue outbreaks in previous years, Chattogram has demonstrated a successful model in controlling dengue and chikungunya. The number of cases, once above 9,000, has recently come down to only 109. Sustaining this progress requires public awareness, coordinated action, and a long-term social movement.

Shurokkha’s First Formal Public Engagement Initiative

Shurokkha, a newly formed social welfare organization led by professionals with experience in international humanitarian and development sectors, organized this programme with support from Chattogram City Corporation. This was Shurokkha’s first formal and successful public engagement activity.

Message from the Mayor

Honourable Mayor of Chattogram City Corporation, Dr. Shahadat Hossain, attended as the Chief Guest. He highlighted the city’s use of environment-friendly BTI technology, ward-level mosquito control activities, and strict monitoring. He emphasized that citizens must keep their homes, rooftops, gardens, and water-holding spaces clean to sustain the progress.

Prevention is the Most Effective Solution

Dr. Rasheduzzaman Mandal and Arman Ali presented the keynote discussion on behalf of Shurokkha. They emphasized that preventive measures are more effective and sustainable than treatment alone in managing public health risks. Shurokkha aims to bring awareness to every household and connect stakeholders for collective action. As Chair of the session, Shurokkha President Dr. M. M. Taimur Hasan reaffirmed the organizations unwavering commitment to continuing its engagement with all stakeholders in promoting preventive healthcare, strengthening community awareness, and supporting collaborative initiatives for a healthier Bangladesh.

Participation of Experts and Stakeholders

The event was attended by Civil Surgeon Dr. Jahangir Alam, representatives from the health and education departments of Chattogram City Corporation, Chattogram Polytechnic Institute, journalist organizations, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society, and various civil society organizations.

Awareness Rally

After the citizen meeting, guests, Shurokkha members, students, and volunteers participated in a colorful awareness rally. Leaflets and guidance materials on dengue prevention were distributed among city residents.
